Before Amal was established as an independent charity in 2020, it was piloted by the Saïd Foundation in 2017, when 39 projects took place across the UK. The Amal Programme followed from 2018-2021 with a further 24 projects. The Pilot and Programme awarded grants in support of a rich diversity of arts projects that helped to increase understanding of the UK’s Muslim communities among people of other faiths and none and to foster a stronger sense of belonging among its Muslim communities. These projects aimed to help reshape the narrative surrounding Muslim communities in the UK.
This included by gathering evidence about how growing Muslim creativity helps tackle Islamophobia. They provided a platform for Muslim artists and participants to explore and unleash their creative capabilities, enabling them to authentically share their own stories. This showcase introduces the projects undertaken between 2017 and 2021. They provided the learning that informed Amal’s later work as an independent organisation and stand as a testament to the dedication, creativity and impact fostered by the Amal community during its early stages.
