Kaleidoscope Syrian Refugee Audio Drama Aberdeen / Glasgow

Project Partner: Prospero World & Refuge Media Productions
Location: Aberdeen & Glasgow
Programme: Part of Amal's Pilot 2017

These linked projects enabled Syrian refugees, recently arrived in Aberdeen and Glasgow under the UK’s resettlement programme, to explore their experiences both in war-torn Syria and as refugees navigating cultural differences in a new country, raise awareness of the situation of refugees through radio drama, and build confidence and friendships.  In both cities, refugees participated in creative writing workshops out of which radio plays based on their experience emerged. In Aberdeen, under the direction of Syrian writer/director Mohammed Abou Liban, two radio episodes were recorded in Arabic and English, acted by some of the refugees who had participated in creating the episodes. These were broadcast on Arabic radio stations as well as Aberdeen’s community station. In Glasgow, members of the group went on to participate in the staging of Euripides’ play The Trojan Women with their stories woven into this ancient text.
