Lecture: Divine Love and the Art of Islam

Join The Prince’s Foundation – School of Tradition Arts for Divine Love and the Art of Islam. A lecture by William Chittick.

God’s love for human beauty, and human love for divine beauty, are explicit themes of the Quran and the Hadith. Muslim scholars developed a general theory of love and beauty that came to permeate religious thought and display its fruit in the various realms of art and literature. Of particular interest are theories of imagination, an ambiguous realm that can pull the soul toward the divine beauty or drive it in other directions.

William C. Chittick is Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, Stony Brook University (New York). He is author and translator of thirty books and 150 articles on Islamic thought and literature. His more recent works include In Search of the Lost Heart: Explorations in Islamic Thought (2012), Divine Love: Islamic Literature and the Path to God (2013), and Rashīd al-Dīn Maybudī’s Unveiling of the Mysteries(2015).
